Chief Medical Examiner Anny Sauvageau of Alberta, Canada and retired NYPD Lieutenant Commander Vernon J. Enhanced with more than 100 color photos, the book explores:

  • The evolution of the concept of sexual asphyxia and autoerotic death
  • The definition and epidemiology of autoerotic death, pitfalls involved in the application of the term autoerotic, and best practices for approaching these death scenes
  • Death scene characteristics and the importance of recognizing clues to the autoerotic nature of a death
  • Methods of autoerotic death, including hanging, plastic bags, chemical substances, and other less-common scenarios
  • Atypical victims of autoerotic deaths

Using a case history format, the book presents a complete analysis of all aspects of this unusual and unfortunate type of death. The combination of theory and practice, along with up-to-date science, makes this book an unparalleled resource for all those involved in the investigation of these peculiar incidents.

There is so little research done on this subject in the law enforcement world so this book is not the length of the Practical Homicide, but did have some interesting crime scene info.

This book is an extremely comprehensive study of this particularly difficult type of death scene. Dr. Sauvageau and Lt. Cmdr. Geberth, using a case history format methodically break down and organize the different sub categories within the occurrence of autoerotic death. This 180 page book includes many full color photographs of autoerotic death scenes with a full description and analysis of each. Each case study includes a medical analysis of the death as well as a description and study of the physical and or mechanical elements of the case.
As a homicide detective and 27 year law enforcement veteran, I can say that autoerotic death scenes can be confusing and even shocking to even the most seasoned of investigators. These scenes are often misread due to inexperienced responders and the low frequency of these events. This book is an appropriate and necessary addition to the library of the full spectrum of responders from first line patrol to homicide detective as well as others working in the medicolegal discipline.
It includes a very useful index as well as numerous checklists for the forensic expert which provide clear and valuable guidance.
The book is printed text book quality on glossy paper.

Autoerotic Deaths - Practical Forensic and Investigative Perspectives
Review by Larry Thomas

A top-shelf addition to Mr. Geberth’s Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations Series.

Death Investigators know the value of appropriate resources when conducting inquiries into unattended deaths, especially when the cause of death may be one that many investigators have limited direct experience with in their careers. Autoerotic death falls within that category and that is why this collaborative effort by Dr. Sauvageau and Mr. Geberth is essential reading material and such a resource for the professional death investigator.

The combined credentials of the two authors of Autoerotic Deaths, one as a forensic pathologist and expert on asphyxia with the other as the undisputed top international homicide and forensic consultant, provides the background and validation for the authors to explain autoerotic deaths to the reader as he or she digests this modern comprehensive review of the subject. These two experts demonstrate the best practices method of case evaluation and resolution.

A review of the book’s index will immediately confirm that you have picked up the definitive textbook on autoerotic deaths. As with the other works included in the Practical Homicide Series, Mr. Geberth has provided death investigators with a valuable time-saving resource.

As I read Autoerotic Deaths, I recalled my conversations with the BTK serial killer who acknowledged that he practiced autoerotic sexual activities. If fact he cited his practice of solo sexual activity as a reason that we did not have more homicide victims attributed to him. Many of the autoerotic exploitations that he practiced fall within both the typical and atypical methodologies. Autoerotic Deaths will be a great resource to help investigators evaluate and understand crime scene presentations that involve bizarre sexual practices.

This professionally-bound book also lives up to the expected standard of Mr. Geberth’s work in its quality of presentation including the color photographs, case analysis and investigative checklists. Thank you Dr. Sauvageau, Mr. Geberth and the many case contributors that made this textbook available.

The newest book in the renowned Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations series, Autoerotic Deaths: Practical Forensic and Investigative Perspectives, is co-authored by forensic pathologist Anny Sauvageau, M.D., founder of the Working Group on Human Asphyxia, and series editor Vernon J. Geberth, retired Commander of the Bronx Homicide Task Force with the New York Police Department. The text draws from the unique combination of the medical knowledge of an academic forensic scientist and the vast practical experience of a "murder cop" and consultant in medicolegal death investigations. The result provides the forensic community the definitive treatise on the subject of autoerotic asphyxia.
This is an extremely well written and elegantly illustrated book that applies the principles of Commander Geberth''s Practical Homicide Investigation to the subject of sexual asphyxias. Beginning with a review of the historical and literary recognition of the subject, Autoerotic Deaths explores the investigative, forensic pathologic and pathophysiologic aspects of the typical and more uncommon methods employed by autoerotic practitioners. Drawing material from numerous case studies, the authors provide a thorough understanding of the importance of the multidisciplinary medicolegal investigation of such deaths. They also bring important new medical knowledge to the field through the study of the agonal sequence of filmed hangings made available to the authors. The result is that Autoerotic Deaths: Practical Forensic and Investigative Perspectives is a comprehensive text that will be a valuable resource for law enforcement, forensic pathologists and behavioral scientists.
